Release a new version
Press Start an update, upload the new files, add release notes, and release it. Past buyers get it on their order page for free.
Release it
- Go to Products and open your product.
- Open What buyers get.
- Check the number under New version, like 1.1, then press Start an update. You'll see this once the product has been published.
- Upload the files for this version. Include everything buyers need, since each version has its own files.
- Write Release notes if you like.
- Decide whether to leave Email N past buyers on. See tell your buyers.
- Press the Release button, which shows the version number, like Release v1.1.
Nothing is visible to buyers until step 7.
What happens next
- Buyers with active access see the new version on their order page, marked Latest, at no charge.
- They keep every earlier version below it, unless you withdraw one.
- Your product page shows the new version number.
- Anyone who bought an option only gets files meant for that option.
- Buyers whose order was fully refunded or who lost a dispute don't get it.
Why you can't replace a file
A released version is locked. You can't swap or delete its files or change its notes. That way, a buyer always has exactly what they paid for, and you have a clear record of it. Even a small fix is a new version.
Your first version doesn't work this way until you publish. Before that, you can add and remove files freely, and Publish releases them as 1.0.
Good to know
- You can have one unreleased update at a time. There's no button to discard one, but nobody sees it, and you can replace its files whenever you like.
- You can release a version even if some of its files are in review. Buyers see Being reviewed on those until they're cleared.
- A product delivering only A link has no versions. Just change the address. See sell a link.
Common problems
- "Finish or release the current draft version first." You've already started an update. It's the box marked Update.
- "That version label already exists." Choose another number.
- "Use a version like 1.1 or 2.0." Use letters, numbers, dots or dashes.
- "Upload at least one file before releasing." The update needs its own files.
- "Wait for uploads to finish." If a file seems stuck, see my upload failed.
